Ten years ago, a group of educators from the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Communication Disorders department decided they could change the face of illiteracy in the U.S. Teaching reading to kids who couldn’t learn in a traditional classroom, they found, required a highly specialized and complex approach including school change, teacher training and coaching, student tracking and lots of research and analysis. They created the HILL, which has worked in specific school districts to improve literacy rates. Now, HILL is ready to launch nationally, to touch thousands of teachers and millions of children who struggle to learn to read.
